My name is Linda and I work on Medical Rehab where B.J. has been for 27 days today.  It is really great to see the progress that he has made.  B.J. is very lucky to have such great family and friends that have been here for him 24 hours a day 7 days a week even after all this time.  That makes such a difference in the progress of the patient.  Our prayers are with you.  All of your hard work will be worth it sooner than you think.

I'm very happy to see B.J. making progress.  He has always had an incredible love for life and happiness.  Maybe that's why people love to be around him, that energy makes you feel so good.  I haven't seen B.J. since high school or very many other people from up the river for that matter.  And I miss it.  My thoughts and prayers are with B.J. and his family.

I have known B.J. ever since he came to Yeager Airport.  He was one that on his first day, he would speak to everyone.  He has a knack to make everyone laugh no matter how bad the day has been.  The last time I saw B.J. I had went to the airport to see a few people.  As soon as I walked in the door he smiled that smile of his.  It brightened up my day (and I needed it that day).  But B.J. always knows when someone is not having a very good day and is always able to make them feel better.  I am a lot older than B.J. but he still seems to know what to say to make me feel better or laugh.  B.J. I wish you the best and look forward to seeing you soon.  Take care of yourself, everyone is behind you 100 percent.  If you need anything please let me know.  You have brought so much joy to everyone.  I think it's our turn to lift you up.  My prayers are with you and your family.  Good Luck and keep your head up.  This too will pass.

Love you,
Rhonda Burgess

It is so good to hear B.J. is improving everyday.  I live in Nashville, Tennessee now, but my mom and dad update me on B.J. frequently (they speak to his Aunt a lot to get updates).  I just want you all to know I have been praying for B.J. and the family since I heard the news.  It really sounds like he is progressing well, thanks to all the love that surrounds him.  I am a nurse at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and I have taken care of lots of patients with the injury B.J. has, on the positive note, I have seen so many patients overcome this injury with time and go home with their family.  The best medicine for B.J. is the love his family and friends show him everyday and the positive reinforcement!  When I met B.J. back in my high school days I knew B.J. was a strong person who never let anything hold him down.  He has definitely proven that!  Please send him my thoughts and prayers.  Let B.J. know that he has always been one of my Dad's favorite.... B.J. would see me and always ask... "How is Benny Knight?" my dad always liked to talk to him.  Let B.J. know that thoughts and prayers have been sent to him from the Knight Family!

Love and Prayers,

My heart and prayers go out to B.J., his family and friends that are going through this hard time.  I haven't seen B.J. much since high school.  Keep GOD close to you and you will get through this come what may.  It will make all those involved much different and stronger.  I drove past Elkview Middle School this past Saturday without time to stop and it was great to see the big turnout for the benefit.  It's heart warming that people can still pull together in this day and age.

Trust in God,

I am so happy to read that B.J. is improving so well.  As I read the updates, I am so touched by the amount of love and devotion Chad embodies for his brother.  I remember the spunk that B.J. always had growing up and know that the same determination will pull him through this.  He has and will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.  B.J., stay strong and God bless!

B.J.,

I haven't seen you since I graduated, but I know the person that you were then and know also that people such as yourself only improve with age.  It is so easy to ask "Why?", but don't.  I know you have a long road ahead of you, and it is certainly a tragedy that this has happened.  Some of the most terrible things happen to the best people, but believe me, God always has a reason or plan for everything.  While reading all of the comments left on this site I realized that almost everyone mentioned God and prayers.  Your situation has affected many lives and has brought so many people closer to God.  This alone could be the answer to "Why?".

My son Dylan became very ill when he was two and had to have a trach to keep him alive.  It was pure Hell for all involved, but we all made it and are stronger individuals as a result.  I always asked "why?" until I turned it over to God and trusted him completely to heal my son.

On the eve of a huge reconstructive surgery on his airway that was going to involve 6 weeks of hospitalization under heavy sedation on a ventilator.  I asked God to show me the way because I couldn't bear to see my baby like this without His help.  I opened the Bible and immediately it fell to Matthew 8:13.  The passages there told me to have absolute faith and God would not fail me.  That was good enough for me.

45 minutes into my son's surgery (it was to take a minimum of 6 hours), the nurse came to the waiting area.  I panicked, I thought they had lost him.  The doctors were right behind her.

They had removed the trach and when the internal scar tissue came out, there was firm, healthy airway underneath and the reconstruction of his airway was not necessary.  He was released from the hospital in 2 weeks.

My son Dylan is now a healthy 9 year old, and the only evidence that he had a problem is a slight, barely noticeable scar on his neck.  His speech and voice quality were not affected, nor did he have developmental delays as originally predicted by medical staff.  In fact, he is in the gifted program and is testing to be double promoted this coming school year.

Dylan's issues changed me forever.  I now know not to question God, and to never let my faith waiver that He will take care of His own.

I wanted to share this story with you and your family and anyone else reading the postings on your website to encourage everyone to keep faith in God to pull all of you through this.  You will figure out in your own time the rhyme and reason to all of your hardship, and I'm sure that you will use it to do something positive.  Until then, I wish you a speedy recovery.  God Bless!

I was stopping through to check for updates and wanted to say I think it's great that everyone is still fighting and sending so much love.  The photos are a nice reminder of that wonderful smile that's always on B.J.'s face.  It's times like these I wish I were home in WV to participate in these fundraisers and rallies.  Keep fighting B.J.!! We love you!!

My name is Henry Fauber, I work for US Airways at Yeager.  I've known B.J. for about 7 years.  We all love B.J. and miss him very much.  He can make light of any situation, which was always great.  I have many, very funny stories about and from B.J., most of which I couldn't share with my mom.  Get well and we will go bang around some buggies again.  Our prayers are with you and your family.

Dear B.J. and family,
I haven't gotten to see much of B.J. since high school.  The last time I did we were dancing at a club in Charleston.  I just wanted to extend my thoughts and earnest prayers.  I still live in the area if I can be of any help.

I just wanted to say all of you are in mine and Mike's thoughts and prayers.  I know from experience this is a very tough situation to go through.  I know there are no kind words anyone can offer to bring joy out of a situation such as this, but I can say, patience, prayer, friends/family sincerely got me through Mike's recovery, as I hope it will help with B.J.'s.

I recall the days when nothing exciting happened, they seem to be so long and you wonder if things could get much worse, but then I remembered, they could be MUCH worse.  I also recollect how exciting it was on the days when Mike did something new, learning to squeeze something on demand/giving a thumbs up/open his eyes/walk/talk/tie his shoes/put a fishing pole together/throwing a rock or a balloon, etc.

It was truly like watching a child in fast forward, but it was actually a miracle from up above.  I'm happy to hear B.J. has done so well.  Anyone who went to school with him or hung out with him knows he is a fighter and he'll not give up.  I pray for a full/speedy recovery for B.J.  And if you guys should need anything, don't hesitate to ask.

It's times like these that our faith in God is tested, but it should be noted that He is at work in this tragic situation.  As a friend of B.J.'s who was also hit by a drunk driver on Capitol Street, I can look and say that we are both still alive!  If there are those out there who question where God is when our friend is stuck in a hospital bed, always remember... at least he's in a hospital room and still alive!  Things could've been a whole lot worse, but there are still bigger plans for B.J.  From the few times I've stopped in the hospital to get updates, I can see what a great support system he is surrounded with.  You have all been, and continue to be in my prayers.  I can't wait for the day that I see B.J. in downtown Charleston somewhere, and start up the WVU vs. Marshall argument, just to get him all haired up!

God Bless(es)

It's hard to believe all this happened 3 weeks ago.  B.J. has been fighting so hard to come back to his friends and family and they are all so ready to have him back too.  For three weeks now the one question that has been on everyone's mind is why... why B.J. ?  How many times have all of us made that same walk down Capitol Street?  How many times have we all been out with friends, just enjoying hanging out, without a care in the world?  It was all taken from B.J. in the blink of an eye.  B.J., the guy that can make everyone laugh... the guy that LOVES Mountaineer football... the guy you're glad to call your friend.  Everyone that knows him has a B.J. story or two and that's what keeps us smiling and laughing now.  We KNOW he will wake up and start in on everyone around him.  We miss you B.J. and can't wait for you to be back!  Everyday I'm praying for B.J., Lindsay, Chad and all of B.J.'s family and friends.  We love all of you!!!

Me and my family are close friends of Brooke and Tim Breeden.  We have been praying and will continue to pray for B.J.  God can and will do anything; just keep the faith and remain positive.  My nephew was riding a bicycle on a street in West Nashville a couple of years ago and was hit by a big bronco truck.  He was in the hospital and rehab so long but God was there the entire time.  The doctors told the family to expect him not to live and if he does he will never be able to care for himself.  He was in the hospital for 3 months and in rehab for 3 months.  There is power in prayer.  Today he is doing well, just like any other normal 21 year old.  He has seizures periodically but they seem to have subsided.  He will be graduating from college next spring.  God is a God of miracles.  There is nothing too hard for God.

Please remember these scriptures (Matthew 19:26) and (Phil 4:13) and if possible, have someone read them to B.J. every single day.  I can guarantee you that his life will never be the same.  We have to read the Word of God to him so he can think on something good and something that will last.  Be encouraged and know that there are people and an entire church family praying for him in Nashville, Tennessee.  We are believing God for great things and cannot wait to hear the praise reports.

To B.J.'s mom, be encouraged God will see you through; to Lindsay hold on to what God has told you.  You two remind me so much of Tim and Brooke; absolutely beautiful and look so great together.  God Bless you Chad and the entire family for allowing him to use you to be a blessing, forgetting about your own needs to care for B.J.  God is going to bless you for that.

God Bless you dearly from the Towles Family.

Hey B.J. you are in my thoughts and prayers.  A week after this tragic incident my husband happened to be on the Internet looking at the news in WV and saw your picture and immediately called me knowing how good of friends we were in high school and how much we hung out (dancing buddies) when I saw the news I was torn.  I know that you are a fighter and will come out of this fine.  You have a lot of friends and family pulling for you.  I hope you recover soon.  If you or your family ever need anything I am there.

Lindsay, you are doing a great job being there for him, stay strong he needs you close.  I know how hard this has to be, knowing my sister went through a terrible accident with her husband right after they got married which he is now in a wheel chair and she has stood by his side all the way.  I look up to people like that with a good heart, it shows how much you care for someone and no matter what happens that person is there.  I am sure you are that person.  I hate that this happened but I know B.J. he will be B.J. when all is well.  B.J. keep fighting we all hope you come out of this soon.

I can't wait for B.J. to wake up and see how many people love him... I bet he had no idea how important he was to so many people's lives.  I'm not sure I even knew how important he was to me until I missed his pretty face so much!  I love B.J. for his "beautiful" singing voice, for the fact that he knows every word to every song ever written which he sings so very loudly, for his awesome jukebox picks, and for his signature nostril flare!!  Most of all, though, I love that B.J. has touched so many people's lives without even trying... he has a way of making people feel like they belong, anywhere that he is.  Even though there are not too many people on the earth that B.J. hasn't made fun of, I believe that he truly cares about every person that comes into his life.  While this whole situation seems like the most unfair thing that could ever happen to any person (especially one as good as B.J.), if one good thing could come from it, I hope it is that we remember not to take our friends (or family) for granted.  I pray everyday that we will have our B.J. back very soon... I can't wait to hear him sing Country Roads again!  And when you get to talk to B.J., make sure you tell him that he has the best brother and girlfriend that anyone could ever ask for!

BJ, You are in my thoughts and prayers.  There are so many of us pulling for your recovery.  Your mom may actually remember mine, I think they worked together at the phone company.  I just saw you a few months ago and it was so good to see you.  I just saw Chad a few weeks ago at Griff's and that was a treat too.  You have always been crazy, LOL, but you are sincerely happy to see the people you know and even if ten years have passed, it was just like you hadn't seen me in a few days.  You bring smiles and laughter to all who surround you and you will again.  I hope that when you are able to have visitors I will be able to see you.  Take care and rest up while you can, you are gonna be busy getting hugged to pieces soon enough by all of us who care about you!

Hello, my name is Rory Robinson.  I work for Delta Airlines at Yeager Airport.  Of course this is how I met B.J. when he came to work for United a few years back.  And ever since then we would talk every time we crossed paths, no matter what we were doing we always stop and talk and man I tell ya, you won't find another funnier or crazier guy that ol' B.J.  B.J. has told me all of his hilarious stories, that would make me laugh to tears.  Everyday when I walk through the doors at the airport there would be B.J. behind the counter and even if he had a customer in front of him he would yell out to me, "What's up sexy?"  And I'd say, "You, you sexy beast."  The last time I spoke with B.J. was the day before all of this happened.  He invited me to go out on the boat that Friday but I had to decline because of prior plans.  I wish I would have went.  But he is going to get better with time, rest, and help from family and friends.  I pray for B.J., his family, and all who know him.  Thanks so much.

Hey it's Jessy Tyree, I went to school with BJ. He is in my prayers and thoughts! I will be visiting this site as much as possible cause I seen his cheerful face about a week before this, he's a friend of mine and always will be!

June 20th, 2008

Someone as strong and determined as BJ will have nothing but success in this challenge he is facing now. Willpower is the best medicine. BJ is precious to each of us in one way or another in each of our lives, he has made many people truly smile and he WILL make it through this. It wouldn't be right for God to take away such a precious gift that he has blessed us with.

In the meantime, we will keep praying for him and keep visiting him until he wakes up and sees us all waiting for him to make us laugh again! We love you BJ, keep fighting and always remember that this world wouldn't ever be the same without you! Oh yeah - and GO 'EERS!!

I just wanted BJ and his family to know I’m keeping them all in my thoughts and prayers each day. I look forward to updates from Chad and from Kelli Surface. She has done a great job keeping me in the loop and it’s greatly appreciated. It’s so nice to see that each day seems a little better, that his strength is shining through with each movement or the slightest bit of recovery. We all know it’s a long road ahead, but let us not forget. Let us keep fighting in our hearts and in our prayers with him.

Life is so unpredictable and fragile.  I am so sorry that this happened to you BJ and I really hope this site is able to help.  And I hope someday very soon you will be reading all of this BJ and see just how many people care about you and want to help.  And in the meantime, I hope BJ's loved ones are able to read the things here and be brought strength knowing that there are so many people thinking of you and praying for you.
Keep fighting BJ, everyone is behind you!
